Kundli & Birth Chart
The 12 Houses of a Kundli and What Each Rules
The 12 houses of a Kundli are the twelve sections of your birth chart, and each one rules a different area of life — from your own body and money to marriage, career and health. In Vedic astrology these houses are called Bhava (meaning "state" or "area of life"). This guide gives you a simple table of what each house rules, plus plain-language notes so you can start reading your own chart with confidence.
If you are new to all this, it helps to first understand what a Janam Kundli is. The houses are the part of the chart where life actually "happens".
What is a house (Bhava) in a Kundli?
Picture your chart as a house with twelve rooms. Each room is a Bhava, and each room holds a different part of your life. The planets are like people walking through these rooms — a planet sitting in the career room colours your work life, a planet in the marriage room colours your relationships.
The counting always begins from your Lagna (the rising sign — your first house) and moves in order. This is why your Ascendant or Lagna matters so much: it decides where house number one sits, and every other house follows from there.

The four house groups
Astrologers often read houses in groups of four, because houses in the same group share a flavour.
Kendra (angular) houses — 1, 4, 7, 10
These are the pillars of the chart — self, home, marriage and career. Planets here are strong and active. A healthy Kendra often means a steady, grounded life.
Trikona (trine) houses — 1, 5, 9
These are the luck and blessing houses — self, creativity/children, and fortune. The 5th and 9th especially are considered the most auspicious, linked to good karma and wisdom.
Dusthana (difficult) houses — 6, 8, 12
These are the challenge houses — debt and illness, sudden change, and loss. They are not "bad", but they ask for effort, patience and growth. Many spiritual people have strong 12th houses.
Upachaya (growing) houses — 3, 6, 10, 11
These houses improve with age and effort. Even difficult planets here tend to give better results over time, as you build courage, skill and income.
How to read a house in three steps
You do not need to memorise everything. For any house, ask three simple questions:
- Which sign is on the house? This sets the basic mood of that life area.
- Which planets sit in it? A planet here directly influences that part of life — for example, Venus in the 7th often softens married life, while Saturn there may bring delay then stability.
- Where is the house lord? Every house has a "lord" (the ruler of its sign). Where that lord sits connects two areas of life together.
To understand the planets themselves, see our guide to the nine planets, the Navagraha.
A worked mini-example
Say your 10th house (career) has the sign Capricorn on it, and Saturn — Capricorn's own lord — sits there strongly. In plain terms, that often points to a disciplined, slow-but-solid career, perhaps in administration, law or long-term building work. The person may rise later than their peers but hold their position firmly.
Now add Jupiter (wisdom and teaching) to that same 10th house, and the career flavour may lean toward guidance, teaching or advisory roles.
This is how a chart is read — not from one piece, but from how the sign, the planets and the house lord talk to each other. It is a conversation, not a single verdict.
Houses people ask about most
A few houses come up again and again in everyday readings, so it helps to know them well:
- 1st house (self): your overall health, vitality and how you carry yourself. Astrologers check this first in almost every reading.
- 7th house (marriage): the classic "marriage house", describing your spouse, partnerships and how you relate one-to-one. It is central to marriage matching.
- 10th house (career): your profession, status and public reputation — the question most working adults bring to a reading.
- 2nd and 11th houses (money): the 2nd rules savings and family wealth, while the 11th rules income and gains. Read together, they describe your money flow.
- 5th and 9th houses (luck): the two most auspicious houses, linked to education, children, wisdom and good fortune.
If your main concern is one of these areas, a reading focused on that single house is usually far more useful than a vague all-round prediction.
A gentle reminder
Houses describe tendencies, not certainties. A difficult 6th or 8th house does not doom anyone, and a strong 10th does not guarantee fame. A Kundli offers guidance and self-reflection — a way to understand your natural terrain so you can plan with your eyes open. Your effort writes the real story.

Frequently asked questions
Which house is most important in a Kundli?
The 1st house (Lagna) is the foundation, because the whole chart is read from it. For "luck" and blessings, astrologers watch the 5th and 9th houses closely. There is no single "best" house — it depends on the question you are asking.
Are the 6th, 8th and 12th houses always bad?
No. They are challenging houses, but they also rule service, research, spirituality, healing and letting go. Many hard-working and deeply spiritual people have strong placements here. They ask for effort, not fear.
What does an empty house mean?
An empty house is completely normal — most charts have several. It simply means no planet sits there at birth. You read an empty house through the sign on it and the position of its lord elsewhere in the chart.
How are houses different from signs?
Signs (Rashi) are the twelve zodiac bands the planets move through. Houses (Bhava) are the twelve life areas set by your rising sign. A sign is the "costume"; a house is the "room". Each house carries one sign on it.
Do I need my exact birth time to read the houses?
Yes, ideally. The house positions depend on your Lagna, which shifts roughly every two hours. An accurate birth time keeps the houses correct, so confirm it from a birth record if you can.
