Kundli Milan Explained: How Guna Milan Scoring Works

Kundli Milan is the traditional way of comparing two birth charts before marriage to see how naturally two people may fit together. At its heart sits a simple-looking number: a Guna Milan score out of 36. This guide explains, calmly and in plain language, how that score is built, what each part measures, and why a low number is not the end of the road.

If you have ever been handed a matchmaking report and felt your stomach drop at the figure on top, take a breath. By the end of this article you will understand exactly where that number comes from — and how to read it like a map, not a verdict.

What Kundli Milan actually is

Kundli means your birth chart — a snapshot of the sky at the moment you were born. Milan means matching. So Kundli Milan is the practice of placing two charts side by side to study how their energies interact.

The most common method in North India is Guna Milan (guna = quality or trait). It scores eight areas of compatibility and adds them up to a maximum of 36 points, also called 36 gunas. The higher the score, the more these eight areas are said to support each other naturally.

It is important to say this early and honestly: Guna Milan is a guidance tool, not a guarantee. It reflects certain classical patterns between two charts. It cannot measure love, effort, respect, or how two families treat each other. Those matter just as much — arguably more.

The 8 kootas and their points

The 36-point total is divided across eight factors called kootas (koota = a category or group). Each koota carries a different maximum weight. Here is the full breakdown.

# Koota What it checks Max points
1 Varna Spiritual/ego compatibility 1
2 Vashya Mutual attraction, influence 2
3 Tara (Dina) Health and well-being 3
4 Yoni Physical and intimate compatibility 4
5 Graha Maitri Mental bond, friendship 5
6 Gana Temperament, nature 6
7 Bhakoot Emotional and financial harmony 7
8 Nadi Health of progeny, deep constitution 8

Add the maximums — 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 — and you get 36. That is where the famous out-of-36 figure comes from.

Notice that the last three kootas (Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi) carry 21 of the 36 points between them. This is why a couple can score well on the small kootas yet still see a modest total if one of the big ones is weak. We cover the two most talked-about ones in our guide to Bhakoot and Nadi dosh and what they mean.

How the score is calculated

The calculation rests mostly on each person's Nakshatra (birth star — the constellation the Moon occupied at birth) and Rashi (Moon sign). An astrologer, or a matching tool, looks up the bride's and groom's Nakshatra and Rashi, then applies classical tables for each koota.

In very broad strokes:

  1. Find both Moon positions. The Moon's Nakshatra and Rashi for each person are identified.
  2. Score each koota. Each of the eight factors is compared using its own rule and awarded its points (full, partial, or zero).
  3. Add them up. The eight results are totalled into a score out of 36.
  4. Check for dosh. Separately, the astrologer looks for specific flaws — most commonly Bhakoot dosh, Nadi dosh and Manglik dosh — which may lower the score or need a closer look.

Because so much depends on the exact Moon position, an accurate birth time matters. A difference of even an hour or two can shift the Nakshatra and change the result. If you are unsure of your time of birth, treat any score as approximate.

What the score means — honestly

Here is a gentle, widely used guide to interpreting the total. Treat these as soft bands, not hard lines.

Guna score Common interpretation
Below 18 Considered low; a closer look is usually advised
18 to 24 Acceptable; many good marriages sit here
25 to 32 Considered very good
33 to 36 Rare and considered excellent

A few points worth holding on to:

  • 18 is the usual threshold. Many traditions treat 18 out of 36 as the minimum "green light". We explain the thresholds in detail in what Guna Milan score is considered good for marriage.
  • A perfect 36 is extremely rare and not actually the goal. Plenty of happy couples sit comfortably in the twenties.
  • A low score is not a rejection. It is a prompt to look closer — often the "flaw" cancels out, or an experienced astrologer sees balancing factors elsewhere in the chart.

Why the number is only half the story

Guna Milan looks only at the Moon. A complete reading also weighs the 7th house (the house of marriage and partnership), the position of Venus and Jupiter, the strength of Mars for Manglik considerations, and the overall dasha (planetary period) each person is passing through. Two people with a middling Guna score can have beautifully supportive 7th houses — and the reverse happens too.

This is why we gently discourage anyone from accepting or rejecting a match on the Guna number alone. If you want to understand the house that shapes marriage most, read how the 7th house shapes your marriage and partner.

Think of Guna Milan as a weather forecast. It tells you the general conditions to expect and helps you pack sensibly. It does not decide whether the trip is worth taking — you do, with open eyes.

Frequently asked questions

Is 18 out of 36 enough for marriage?

In most traditions, 18 is treated as the minimum acceptable score. Many long and happy marriages sit in the 18 to 24 range. A score below 18 is simply a signal to look more carefully, often with a full chart reading rather than the Guna number alone.

Can a marriage work with a low Guna Milan score?

Yes. A low score points to areas that may need more conscious effort, but it does not doom a relationship. Many astrologers find that apparent flaws are cancelled by other factors, and a caring, communicative couple can thrive regardless. Numerology and astrology are tools for self-reflection, not fixed predictions.

What if our birth times are not exact?

The score depends heavily on the Moon's position, which can shift with time of birth. If either birth time is uncertain, treat the result as approximate and consider a reading with an experienced astrologer who can account for the uncertainty.

Does a high score guarantee a happy marriage?

No. A high Guna score reflects certain classical compatibilities, but it cannot measure love, respect, effort or family harmony. Those human factors decide far more than any number. Use the score as guidance alongside your own judgement.

Should we match kundlis for a love marriage too?

You can, and many couples do — for peace of mind or to satisfy family. The chart leanings toward love or arranged paths are their own topic; see what your chart leans toward. Matching is a tool for reflection, never a reason to doubt a bond that already feels right.
